Liu Kang is the direct descendant of Kung Lao, a humble monk from the Temple of the Order of Light. It was Kung Lao who had defeated Shang Tsung 500 years ago. Instead of following in the footsteps of his ancestor, Liu Kang, fed up with the ancient teachings of his elders, left the temple of the Order of Light to seek life in America. Plagued by dark visions of the future, he returns home to find that his brother Chan has been killed from the hands of someone at the Tournament. Seeking redemption for fleeing his destiny, Liu Kang enters the tournament in search of his brother's killer.
Portrayed By: Robin Shou. Raised in California, but a veteran of many Hong Kong martial arts films, Shou performs all of his own fight scenes in Mortal Kombat. Shou is the winner of several martial arts competitions in the U.S. and Hong Kong. He is also an international Wu-Shu champion.
